Culture and customs of India by Carol E. Henderson

India is the seventh largest country based on geographical area and the second most populous country in the world. The rapid economic growth in India is making great impacts on the global economy.

India is an amazing land with vast cultural diversity. In this book, the author “provides an expert insight into a cross-section of society, including: landscape and architecture, food, dress, festivals and social customs and lifestyles…”

Besides Indian curry, Bollywood movies and the chaotic traffic conditions I have seen on the news, I honestly do not know much about India. One interesting fact that I have found in this book is that humans have occupied India for a very long time – way back to the Stone Age (about 2 million years B.C.E. [before the current era]). And the first known settlements appeared around 7,000 B.C.E. With its rich history and deep cultural roots, it is no wonder that Indians are using more than 3,000 mother tongues. Tamil and Hindi are just two of the 110 different languages used in India. And Hindi, being the dominant language of north India, subdivides into more than 97 dialects.

I have always felt amazed by India and I hope to travel to India someday. If you have plans to travel to India or just want to know more about India, you should read this book.
