After Effects and Photoshop : animation and production effects for DV and film (Second Edition) by Jeff Foster

About the book

If you are a fan of Photoshop and video effects, After Effects and Photoshop will be a good facilitator. Just like the book title tells you, the use of After Effects and Photoshop are what this book is about.

As is known to all, Photoshop is the best tool for the person who wants to edit pictures. After Effects is primarily used for creating motion graphics and visual effects.  It “allows users to animate, alter, and composite media in 2D and 3D space with various built-in tools and third party plug-ins, as well as individual attention to variables like parallax and user-adjustable angle of observation” (taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_After_Effects, last accessed on 10/2/2010). This book focus on the animation and interaction between Photoshop and After Effects. Use these tools flexibly and your video clip or photo will become more amazing.

The book separates seemingly complex knowledge into different chapters, breaking processes down step by step. With this, as what the book says, “you can take virtually any two-dimensional image and bring it to life, applying some traditional and progressive techniques to your own projects” (cover page). You can obtain basic knowledge on editing the colour, light and focus, blue-screen/green screen shooting, create 3-D layers and Photoshop layers etc.

Here are some examples you can find in this book.

Book chapter 14: Colour, Light, and Focus —this chapter teaches you how to composite objects into a scene, how to concentrate on colour, lighting and focus. In what way the object’s placement needs to match the focal length of the original footage without which it would look fake.

Book chapter 16: Motion Titling Effects —this chapter teaches you how to create a title for your video clip using Photoshop Layers, how to use 3-D layers to simulate 2-D titling, and how to use Animating Text layers in After Effects and create dynamic lower thirds.

This book will serve as a good reference for you to develop your Photoshop and After Effects skills.
