The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic is the first book from the Shopaholic series, by Sophie Kinsella. The story centres around the life of the main character, Rebecca Bloomwood, who works as a financial journalist. The main irony of the story is that although Rebecca works as a financial journalist and dishes out advice to others on how to manage money, she is a shopaholic spending almost all waking, non-working hours on or just thinking about retail therapy. In fact, we should say that retail therapy IS Rebecca’s source of motivation in life.
So this makes her life so interesting. Rebecca knows that she should stop overspending as she has been receiving letters from her bank who is trying to arrange meet-up so that they can settle her financial problem. Despite the fact that Rebecca actually receive a five-figure paycheck as a financial journalist every month, Rebecca was unable to settle her debt. So she tried cutting back her excessive shopping or making more money, but neither seems to work.
The book emphasises that the cycle of debt is not easily broken, so we should learn to plan our spending and always remember that we should not spend beyond what we earn. The author reflects on this reality with a witty sense of humor. I think this book is definitely worth reading. We can entertain ourselves with Rebecca Bloomwood’s social life too. A very well-known quote from Forrest Gump describes perfectly Rebecca’s life: “Life is like a box of chocolate, you will never know what you will get”. So join me by reading the book and be amused by Rebecca’s life-circle on the one hand. But also, be reminded, on the other, that we should always keep an eye on our own finances!
Can Rebecca untangles herself from her dire financial difficulties and break out of the debt cycle? Read it and you will find out!
