Who Wants To Be A Librarian?

3 12 2009

The lucky winners of “Who Wants to be a Librarian”

We have come to the end of “Who Wants to be a Librarian” contest. A total of 403 students took up the challenge and answered 5 questions based on RP Library every week. They cracked their heads and surfed through the library’s website, searching for clues. However, only 20 students managed to answer all the 5 questions in a quiz correctly.

The thoughtful librarians organised this contest so as to increase the awareness and understanding of library services. We also hope to encourage more students to make full use of the library facilities and resources. Well, it is just too bad if you have missed the whole excitement…. But you can still refer to the questions and answers posted on our blog (the links are given below).

Movie Review: The Lake House

1 12 2009

The Lake House is an unusual love story between Kate (Sandra Bullock) and Alex (Keanu Reeves).

The story begins with Kate.  She lives in a lake house and leaves a note for the next occupant when she moved out of the house. Magically, this note is received by Alex who lived in the house 2 years earlier.  Gradually these two lonely hearts fall in love. The problem is that Alex lives in a year that is always 2 years before Kate. How would they meet each other and express their love?

To me, this movie is one of the most touching stories ever told. Romantic, magical, and breath-taking. When Kate finds out that a heart-breaking accident which happened two years ago involved Alex, the desperate feeling she must have experienced made me cry. How could she possibly save him?

In the end, when Kate left the note to ask Alex to wait for her, her voice echoes in my head.

“Wait for me, wait with me. Just wait, wait… Wait two years, Alex. Come to the lake house. I’m here.”

But you shouldn’t wait.  Watch it and be touched. It’s really worth watching.

Who moved my cheese? : for teens : an a-mazing way to change and win! is a book about change in life, business and so on.  There are four characters, each with his own thoughts and different way of viewing life. The contrasts between the four characters will keep you reading until the end.

It does not take much time to read, it’s 96 pages long, and I think it will help you learn how to adapt in a situation and react accordingly when you are faced with change.

Happy Children’s Day!

8 10 2009

Children’s day is celebrated all over the world on various dates. Here in Singapore, the happy occasion falls on 1st October.

On that very day, we had the first Children’s Day celebration run by us at the Library South Programme3 area. After going through several plannings and preparations, we were amazed with the number of kids that turned up for the event.

Our library staff, Miss Adeline Tan, is also trained in story-telling. The program turned out to be very successful and the kids were very enthusiastic and responsive. They enjoyed giving various ideas and suggestions to the stories. They were also able to guess the drawings which were yet to be completed. Kids these days are really smart. :)

After the story-telling session, we played for them 1an hour of Spongebob Squarepants. You should be familiar with the cartoon, right? We could hear the excitement and laughter from the children and they all seemed to be enjoying a lot watching the show.

Simultaneously, a range of books were displayed at the program zone for everyone to take a look.

These books are meant for all to read, even the public. However, do note that only RP staff and students are allowed to loan them. :)

AND THAT’S NOT ALL!

The kids of course, did not leave the library empty handed. Each of them were given a chance to pick one of the balloons that come in many different shapes and sizes. Let’s scroll down and take a look at more images below!

We’d like to thank all staff and parents who have brought your children down to the library and make the event a happening and fruitful occasion for all of us. We hope to have more opportunity in organizing many fun programs in the upcoming years for your kids to learn and enjoy.

See you again next year! For those who have missed out on this event, don’t hesitate to sign up next year! We’ll definitely welcome all children, and you know what they say… THE MORE THE MERRIER! :)
